Mr. Silva - Social Studies, ERWC
Mr.Silva started off right with attending what he calls a hippie school for his elementary years. For high school he would then go to Ukiah High School where he began an interest in football and wrestling, but of course his favorite thing was reading. Silva transferred from Mendocino College to the prestigious UC Berkeley where he then majored in history but also had the curiosity of english and psychology. Although Silva had kids at 22 he graduated with his Bachelor's Degree in 2007. While working 2 jobs he continued on to get his masters at Sonoma State in 2009.
Mr.Silva has taught at Potter Valley Jr./Sr. High School for 5 years. Over the years he has ranged in many aspects of subjects that he’s taught, such as thematic studies or leadership. This year he has taken on the role of teaching 7th and 8th grade history while also teaching Civics/Economics. For the first year Silva is teaching ERWC and History 203 through the college.
When asked what he enjoyed about this school he said that he liked working with students so closely. Also that there is a unique culture and especially a family vibe. Mr.Silva is truly an amazing leader on our campus and doesn’t only improve students academically but also himself.
Economics students conducted a week-long barter project to explore marketing, utility, and voluntary exchange. Each student started with an item valued under a dollar and had to conduct a minimum of three exchanges. The students documented each exchange with a photograph or in writing, and the student with the highest valued item on the due date received ten extra credit points. During the course of the project, students had to consider how to market their item in order to appeal to potential customers. Our big winner was Baldo Alvarez, who started with a half-full bottle of white out and ended up with a Barcelona soccer Jersey worth approximately $50 according to Amazon.com!
