My name is Lori Clark and I am the fifth grade teacher here at Potter Valley Elementary School. I love our small school setting and the warmth and compassion of the people at our school, both adult and children.

I love teaching fifth grade! Not only are the curriculum and content fascinating, the students are mature, hard-working, and capable. I feel fortunate to work with this age group, as they work to impress their teacher and parents. Students really want to see their own progress.

Our school adopted Houghton Mifflin’s reading, social studies, and science long ago. It is still expected that fifth graders will learn American History.  Students need to be ready for the nationwide standardized test for science, the CST. This test reviews all the science material students have learned in grades K-5.  This is our first year of our newly adopted Envision2.0 math program. It seeks to fulfill California Common Core standards in math. This new program is focused, rigorous, and cohesive.  Each lesson addresses one or more of the Common Core Domains and Clusters. The rigor reflects the balance of math concepts and procedural skills and fluency.  Each lesson builds on the previous grade level’s content and the previous lesson’s content. No longer is math simply knowing the answers to basic math facts! Our students must be equipped to succeed in high level thinking. They must be prepared to engage to address global needs.

Students in Room 4’s fifth grade work at their own level, within the current content. Each of them gathers information on each topic from books, magazines, encyclopedias, and internet sources. They work to present their learning through various projects.  Traditional and digital projects are chosen.

I am proud of the level of engagement in my classroom at any given time. No matter what we are learning, students are eager to learn and then present.  This project-based, hands-on learning is most exciting when presenting through 21st Century means. All students gain experience and thrive as they gain 21st Century skills.
