Potter Valley Elementary

Potter Valley Elementary School serves roughly 160 students in grades TK through 6th for 180 days per year beginning in August and ending in June. A quality teaching staff, small classes, and a proud community with a long tradition of support for their school is the basis for the success of Potter Valley Elementary. Class sizes average approximately 22 students per grade which provides students with a more intimate learning atmosphere and personalized relationships. In an effort to maintain a high quality of learning materials, we regularly review and update all textbooks while enriching our program with a variety of hands-on materials and technology.

Meet Our Staff

The Potter Valley Elementary School staff is committed to a comprehensive instructional program and a safe, orderly school environment for all students. District adopted discipline policies and procedures are distributed to all parents and students at the start of each school year and clearly stated behavioral expectations and consequences continue to be communicated regularly throughout the school year. The adopted discipline chart focuses on progressive consequences with suspensions being used only when other alternatives have failed to correct inappropriate behaviors. Behavior that tends to threaten harm, drugs, or weapons result in immediate suspension and for the most serious behavioral infractions, recommendation for expulsion.

In an effort to ensure that education is accessible for all students and at all levels, our student study team process identifies students who have difficulty learning and then works with parents and staff to devise a plan that will assist these students with their education. If concerns persist, and with parental permission, these students can be assessed for specific learning disabilities and help modify their learning plan. All of our special needs students are mainstreamed into the regular education classroom setting with the goal of full inclusion and limit the risk of feeling singled-out.

Our school-wide goals are to challenge all students to excel and demonstrate a command of basic skills:

read, understand, and respond to information from a variety of sources
communicate a logical opinion both verbally and in writing
demonstrate problem-solving and decision-making skills
seek information and ask questions
work independently by setting priorities, organizing time, and following through to completion
develop success habits rooted in a high level of personal responsibility and community service

Potter Valley Elementary creates unique learning opportunities through educational field trips and community events.

Student Support Services

At some point, most students will experience a need for assistance with things such as personal problems, academic issues, learning disabilities, trauma, and/or health issues. Our intervention support personnel and strategies focus on personal responsibility and the development of positive personal social skills in additional to other emotional and developmental support. The following services are available to all K-12 Potter Valley students and when the student's need is beyond our resources, referrals to outside agencies are an option.
