Jean Masson, Second/Third grade combination
jmasson@pottervalley.k12.ca.us
Welcome to Potter Valley’s Combination Class!
A group of highly motivated and focused students make up our combination class. Their eagerness and determination to learn make our classroom an exciting place to be! In our small school, our combination class is unique; the teacher moves up with the students so she teaches new grade levels each year. This fosters a strong connection between the students and the teacher. Additional advantages of the combination class include:
Throughout the week students engage in a well-rounded curriculum based upon the school and statewide Common Core standards. It includes math, Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Visual and Performing Arts and Physical Education. Our math curriculum, Envision 2.0, was adopted in 2016 and provides students with 21st century foundations in numeration, algebraic thinking and so much more. Write Bright, our writing curriculum, helps students to develop skills in narrative, expository and persuasive writing. Our robust Language Arts curriculum uses a whole language approach. This means students develop reading and grammatical skills as they respond to meaningful, engaging children’s literature.

In our small school, our combination class is unique; the teacher moves up with the students so she teaches new grade levels each year. This fosters a strong connection between the students and the teacher. Additional advantages of the combination class include:
- Less competition among students.
- An understanding among students that all learners are different and we all work at different rates.
- Frequent small group instruction and independent work.
- Older students develop leadership skills in teaching and helping others.
- Younger students frequently take on challenges of the next grade level.
